The student-run think tank MANDEHAS started a search for the solutions. The objective of a global campaign is to discover the most innovative sustainability projects across all industries. The solutions serve as a comprehensive manual for modern sustainability practises in various sectors and geographical areas. Over the course of a weekend, inventive student teams worked on sustainable solutions as part of the Future Energy and Autonomy Healing:

 

Reduced Use of Private Vehicles

 

The task of getting to campus in an environmentally friendly manner was taken up by five teams. They developed a variety of solutions, including shuttle buses for staff and students, different parking fees that could be used to finance other approaches, a “gamification” system in which users are compensated with points that can be used to obtain various benefits, and even a transportation hub on campus with electric scooters, a mobile library, and a “pickup” hub for food on the way home.

 

Data centres that are environmentally friendly

 

To complete the data centre challenge, four teams competed. Two of them proposed different iterations of the same concept: setting up decentralised data centres in various municipal basements. The third group proposed growing fungi with waste heat from the data centre to provide locally sourced food.

 

Synthetic intelligence

 

The third issue was how to use artificial intelligence (AI) to interpret photographs taken by drones that keep an eye on vital infrastructure away from densely inhabited regions. The issue right now is that not enough photos are available to train the algorithms. The student team suggested a technique for creating synthetic variations of the photographs so that the AI could still be trained.

 

Servers! Best of the show

 

The student team recommended developing a decentralised system rather than installing servers in massive structures that consume priceless new land and generate a lot of waste heat.

The concept is that brand-new housing complexes and commercial structures can reserve space in their basements that they then rent to a server farm. The building receives important waste heat for heating while the data centre has access to valuable space.

 

In the interest of a “better future”

 

Whether the answers should be improved upon is up to the entire world. However, a number of the student organisations want to continue developing their solutions in order to make them more marketable. In any case, the students have learned the challenge-based learning approach and received significant experience working in teams to solve specific problems.

Future Sustainable Solution Hub leader Medley Lyne was taken aback by the students’ solutions.

They received training in challenge-based learning at the same time. I have a lot of trust in the future since I work with so many great youngsters, says Lyne.
